The Temptation of Christ

The subject is the Matthew 4:1-11. Between Jesus and the devil are the stones that the devil challenges Jesus to turn into bread. Presumably the city pictured in the background is Jerusalem, which is not far from the desert where Jesus was fasting. The tall building would then be the Temple, with a pinnacle sticking up from the roof.

As usual in medieval images of this episode, the devil is pictured as a grotesque.
